I’m the home cook, recipe developer, and budget obsessive behind Cheap Macros. I started this blog after years of feeling like eating well was something only people with big grocery budgets could afford. Spoiler: I was wrong — and I want to prove that to you.
How this all started
I didn’t grow up with a lot of food knowledge. What I did grow up with was a small budget, a deep stubbornness about not wanting to eat like I was broke, and a gradually mounting suspicion that “healthy eating” had been quietly gatekept by people selling expensive supplements, subscription meal kits, and $18 smoothies.
When I started actually paying attention to nutrition — not for aesthetics, just to feel good and have energy — I kept running into the same wall. Everything optimized for health felt priced out of reach. And everything in my price range felt engineered to leave you hungry an hour later.
So I started testing. A lot of testing. I learned to treat my grocery store the way a chef treats a market: figuring out what’s cheap this week, what gives the most nutritional return per dollar, and how to make it taste like something you’d actually crave.
Cheap Macros is everything I figured out along the way.
What “cheap macros” actually means
The name isn’t about restriction. It’s about value — getting the most out of what you spend, in every sense.
Every recipe on this blog is built around the three macros I think about most:
- Protein to build, repair, and keep you full longer than almost anything else. I lean heavily on eggs, legumes, canned fish, and affordable cuts of meat — nothing fancy, everything useful.
- Smart carbs that fuel your body and your brain without the crash that comes from ultra-processed junk. Think oats, rice, potatoes, whole grain pasta — carbs with actual staying power.
- Healthy fats from things like olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocado (when it’s not $3 a piece). Fat is not the enemy — it’s what turns a meal from fuel into something satisfying.
You’ll also find full cost breakdowns on most recipes, because I think transparency about price is just as important as transparency about ingredients.
What you’ll find here
Recipes that are genuinely weeknight-friendly — not “weeknight-friendly” in the food blog sense where it somehow still takes 45 minutes and fourteen bowls. Fast, cheap, filling, and real.
I also write about grocery strategy, macro basics for people who are new to thinking about nutrition, and the occasional deep-dive into why certain cheap ingredients (hello, lentils) are so nutritionally underrated.
No diet agenda. No supplements to sell you. No guilt about eating on a budget.
A note on the recipes
I test everything in a regular home kitchen, with regular grocery store ingredients. No specialty health food stores, no bulk warehouse memberships required. If a recipe calls for something you’d struggle to find or afford, I’ll always give you a substitute.
I’m also not a registered dietitian — I’m someone who’s spent years obsessing over this stuff because I had to, and then kept going because I genuinely love it. If you have specific health needs, a professional’s guidance will always be more valuable than a blog post.
