High-Protein Spinach & Pineapple Green Smoothie — 26g Protein, Under $3

This is the green smoothie that does not taste green. Frozen pineapple and banana do the flavour work so completely that the spinach disappears into the background entirely — the colour is the only evidence it is there, and even that is a vivid, tropical green rather than the muddy grey-green that gives bad green smoothies their reputation. Greek yogurt provides 26 grams of protein without any powder, a squeeze of lime adds brightness, and the whole thing blends into something thick, cold, and tropical that tastes far better than it has any right to for under three dollars. This is the smoothie that converts people who claim they do not like green smoothies.

Calories: 310

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup fresh baby spinach
  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1/4 cup water or coconut water
  • A few ice cubes
  • Optional: a small pineapple wedge and a few spinach leaves on top to garnish

Method

  1. Add the frozen pineapple and frozen banana to the blender first.
  2. Add the Greek yogurt, baby spinach, lime juice, and water or coconut water.
  3. Add the ice cubes.
  4. Blend on high for 30–45 seconds until completely smooth and vivid green.
  5. Check consistency — add water one tablespoon at a time if too thick.
  6. Taste and adjust — an extra squeeze of lime brightens it immediately.
  7. Pour into a tall clear glass.
  8. Garnish with a small pineapple wedge on the rim and a few fresh spinach leaves if using.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

Frozen pineapple and pre-frozen banana coins stored in a zip bag in the freezer make this smoothie a thirty-second assembly job with no fresh fruit needed on the day. Buying spinach in the largest available bag drops the per-serving cost to almost nothing — a cup of spinach weighs very little and one large bag covers many smoothies throughout the week. Coconut water adds a subtle tropical depth for minimal extra cost but plain water works perfectly well.
