Beef & Broccoli Stir Fry: A Takeout Favorite Made Budget-Friendly at Home

This beef and broccoli stir fry recreates the takeout classic in about twenty minutes, using a smaller portion of steak sliced thin to stretch the protein further without sacrificing flavor. A quick sear gives the beef a deep, browned crust before it gets set aside while broccoli steams right in the same pan, soaking up all that flavor left behind. Garlic and ginger add aromatic depth, and a simple soy sauce and honey glaze thickens into a glossy sauce that clings to every piece of beef and broccoli once everything comes back together. Served over a bed of white rice, this dinner delivers that familiar takeout satisfaction with 36 grams of protein and a fraction of the cost or sodium of ordering in. It’s proof that a craving for Chinese takeout doesn’t need to mean picking up the phone, especially when the homemade version costs under $5 and tastes just as good, if not better.

Calories: 470

Ingredients

  • 6 oz lean flank steak or sirloin thinly sliced
  • 1.5 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ginger grated
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds optional

Method

  1. Whisk together soy sauce, honey, and cornstarch in a small bowl to make the sauce.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet or wok over high heat.
  3. Add the sliced beef and sear for 2 to 3 minutes until browned.
  4. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Add the broccoli florets to the skillet with a splash of water and cover to steam for 3 minutes.
  6. Add the garlic and ginger, stirring for 30 seconds.
  7. Return the beef to the skillet.
  8. Pour in the sauce and toss everything together until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and broccoli.
  9. Serve over the cooked white rice and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.

Notes

Thinly slicing a smaller cut of steak stretches it much further than it looks — partially freezing the beef for 15 minutes beforehand makes it much easier to slice thin.
